Ballet

Studying ballet is one of the most effective and elegant ways of improving posture, grace and body awareness. No experience is needed for the beginning class; one year of training is recommended for advanced beginning, and two for intermediate.

Modern/Jazz

Both modern and jazz dance are more expressive and less formal than ballet but still emphasize proper alignment and technique; jazz uses more syncopation and isolation of body parts, while modern is more whole-body and grounded. Both use a variety of music and offer a fun, invigorating dance experience! Beginning classes are for students with little or no prior background; two years or more of training is recommended for intermediate-level classes.

Tap

Come dance the rhythm! Students in the beginning-level class will learn and practice the basics of tap technique; the continuing level will teach more complex rhythms and steps. Tap shoes recommended but not required.

Clogging

Get a great aerobic workout while learning this fun, high-spirited traditional American folk dance done to bluegrass and contemporary music. This is a beginning-level class; hard-soled or tap shoes recommended.

Hip-Hop

These classes teach a fast-paced, high-energy "MTV-style" dance. After a short warm-up, class will focus on learning aerobic dance combinations done to "pop" and hip-hop music. Wear sneakers and be prepared to sweat

B-boying (Break Dance)

B-boying, or break dancing, originated in New York City in the early 70’s and is one of the Four Elements of Hip-Hop. In this physically demanding class, you’ll learn moves such as toprocking, uprocking, and freezes, as well as footwork and power moves. For continuing students as well as motivated beginners; B-girls welcome!

AfroFusion

Experience the excitement of moving to irresistible African rhythms, as well as music of today such as reggaeton, pop, and hip-hop. This beginning-level class combines various African and Afro-Caribbean techniques to give you a high-energy work-out. You'll leave class feeling strong and energized!

Flamenco (Spanish Dance)

Have fun exploring a different culture through this exotic and passionate dance form! Classes will focus on footwork, carriage, rhythm and other techniques of this ancient art originated by Spanish Gypsies. The compas class, open to all levels as well as to musicians, will focus on palmas (handclapping) and other rhythmicexercisesnecessary for the proper understanding of flamenco dance

Belly Dance

Come experience the fun and energy of this exotic dance form! Enjoy low-impact aerobic exercise as you learn the basic moves of Middle Eastern belly dance. Some knowledge of belly dance is required for the continuing class, which will focus more on choreography.

Poi New!

Poi spinning originated from the traditional performance art of the Maori people of New Zealand. It involves swinging balls on ropes in a variety of patterns; of special interest to belly dancers, it increases flexibility, strength and coordination in everyone. In this class, you will learn basic poi moves, as well as how to integrate them with dance. Poi will be available for loan or purchase.

Salsa/Latin

Learn the hottest Latin dances: salsa, merengue, bachata and cumbia. A wide variety of both basic steps and exciting new turn patterns will be taught, making this class suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. No partner necessary; wear dress shoes.

Salsa Divas Cancelled

East Coast Swing

In this beginning-level class, you’ll learn fun 6-count swing moves and cool footwork patterns, as well as how to lead and follow. Partner not required; Session 2 is a repeat of Session 1.

Discover the pleasure of partner dancing in a relaxed atmosphere with

This class will introduce you to the most popular partner dances: foxtrot, waltz, swing and salsa, and will give you the skills to shine at a wedding or have fun at a local swing or salsa dance. Partner not required.

Shag New level!

The official state dance of both Carolinas and a favorite at the beach, the shag has a smooth, relaxed Southern style with an easy swing, precise footwork, and mirror-image partner steps. This class introduces beginning students to the basic steps, as well as a number of variations and turns. You need not bring a partner; smooth-soled shoes recommended.

Pilates Mat

The Pilates floor exercises focus on strengthening the body’s core through precision of movement and integration of the breath rather than through many repetitions. This class is ideal for beginners, but continuing students will also benefit from the emphasis on proper alignment and technique.

Hoopdance New!

This beginning-level class will combine the beauty and grace of dance with the exercise of hooping, an amazing cardiovascular work-out that strengthens and tones every major muscle group as it gives you a massage! A moving meditation, hooping is above all fun, putting a smile on your face as it transforms your body and elevates your spirit. Hoops (think hula hoops but larger, heavier and easier to manipulate) will be available in class for loan or purchase. Space limited; please pre-register.

Gyrokinesis®

Gyrokinesis® incorporates many key principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics and tai-chi. Class begins with self-massage and simple breathing patterns to awaken the body. Next, seated on low stools, the class will begin to mobilize the spine, hips, knees, hamstrings, and other body parts through a series of arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiraling movements in all possible directions. The corresponding breathing patterns stimulate the nervous system, open up the energy pathways and oxygenate the blood. For all fitness levels; stools are provided.

Zumba!

One of the newest exercise crazes is the Zumba fitness program, an upbeat aerobic exercise workout done to Latin and international music. Using a mixture of body sculpting movements and simple dance steps, it is a fun and easy “feel happy” way to burn calories and tone the body.

NIAMorning class!

Nia is an expressive workout that blends dance with the martial and healing arts. You will strengthen, stretch, open and balance your body while dancing to eclectic music from all over the world. T'ai-Chi    

Taijiquan (T'ai-Chi) is a martial art and exercise for overall well-being and conditioning--a system of meditative
yet dynamic movement that improves energy flow throughout the body, eases tension, enhances awareness, and improves balance and strength. This class focuses on Chen style and various Qi (energy) enhancing exercises, and
is appropriate for beginning and continuing students.

Yoga Flow

Yoga is a wonderful way to quiet and focus the mind while increasing the body’s flexibility, balance and strength. This Hatha yoga class uses the breath and sun salutes to connect traditional yoga postures (asanas) in a flow; a major focus is on proper alignment. Suitable for all levels; postures can be adapted to fit each individual’s needs.
